The Arne Nixon Center at the Fresno State Library has just purchased a unique piece of Dungeons & Dragons history. As the first modern role playing game, D&D has become a legendary symbol of 1980s pop culture and beyond. The Center’s item is a 1992 edition of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) Monstrous Compendium translated into Hebrew that was used by an Israeli Dungeon Master in his campaigns. The three-ring binder also includes original artwork by said Dungeon Master, either creatures he created to use or imitations of creatures from the Compendium. Students and researchers can view this rare piece of pop culture history that demonstrates the worldwide popularity of the game and the rise of D&D internationally.
