Congratulations to Special Collections Catalog Librarian Julie Renee Moore on her nomination for the Provost’s Award for Faculty Service. Nominated by her colleagues, the Library commends Julie on her work moving cataloging forward on diversity and inclusion.
Julie is making significant contributions to the field of librarianship, particularly as it pertains to critical cataloging, which is the expression of JEDI in cataloging. Julie’s scholarship includes several publications and presentations that focus on Critical Cataloging. I am proud of the work that Julie is doing to ensure that library services are inclusive and welcome the richness of our diversity. Julie also serves on a number of important committees within the library, the CSU, and nationwide. Julie is a stellar representation of our library services as indicated by her nomination for the Provost’s Award for Faculty Services, which is a true and deserved honor.
Bernadette T. Muscat, Ph.D, interim dean of library services.
Some of Julie’s most recent accomplishments include:
- University Board on Retention, Tenure, and Promotion, during a time when UBRTP is reviewing an unprecedented number of files.
- OLAC (Online Audiovisual Catalogers) Task Force member, currently writing a combined best practices cataloging guide.
- Open Rules for Cataloging (ORC) Working Group, the ultimate goal of which is to provide an alternative, understandable, and freely available set of cataloging rules.
Julie’s main research interest area is critical cataloging, which was the topic of her last sabbatical. “Critical Cataloging is the confluence of cataloging, ethics, and social justice.” She says that this “is the most significant and meaningful part of my work these days” and is a particular focus of the Special Collections Research Center.
Finally, Julie is chairing a book chapter writing group to include “Inclusive Cataloging in an Academic Library Consortium” (working title) in Inclusive Cataloging: Philosophical Questions and Case Studies in Reparative Cataloging, ALA Editions, editors, Amber Billey, Elizabeth Nelson, and Rebecca Uhl.
“I am deeply grateful and humbled to be nominated and recognized for my service achievements,” says Julie, “and for the impact I have had on creating a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, accessible, and just academic environment in the behind-the-scenes work that I do. I am thankful to have the platform at the Fresno State Library to do this meaningful work for the greater good.”
