A student entering the Library on the first day of school.

The Library will close to the public at 8:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. After 8:00 p.m., only Fresno State students, faculty, and staff with a valid Bulldog ID card will be allowed to enter the library. This policy is in place to help enhance safety, reduce distractions, and ensure a secure, peaceful study environment for our Fresno State community.

How it works and why it matters.

  • Starting August 20, 2025 the Library introduced “Bulldog Hours” from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday.
  • During Bulldog Hours, only Fresno State affiliates will be able to access the Library building using their valid Bulldog Card via card swipe.
  • The Library doors will allow entry only to students, staff, and faculty with an active ID.
  • Why this matters: Bulldog Hours are designed to create a safer, more focused, and student-centered study environment during peak academic hours.
  • This initiative aims to foster a stronger sense of community among Fresno State students and improve the late-night study experience.

FAQ

  • Why was this put into place?
💡The library experienced an increase in incident reports and disruptions caused by members of the public last year. The majority of these occurred after 8 p.m., making the library an unwelcoming option for evening study for our students. Our intention is to ensure that Fresno State Students have a safe and comfortable place to study with less anxiety and a greater focus on the student experience.
  • Who can enter during Bulldog Hours?
✅ Only Fresno State students, faculty, and staff with an active Bulldog Card.
  •  What if I forget my Bulldog Card?
🔁 There will be a grace period until October 1 for you to obtain or replace your Bulldog card. After that time, you will need your card to enter. We recommend keeping it with your keys, wallet, or phone. To order or replace a card, follow the instructions at Bulldog Card Center in Joyal.
  • Can members of the public use the library during these hours?
🚫 No. The general public will not have access to the building from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday.
  • Will services inside the library change during Bulldog Hours?
🖥️ No! Everything inside will be the same. Study areas, Wi-Fi, study rooms, and the circulation desk will still be available. Check the website for specific service hours.
  • How will this help students?
🛡️ Increased safety, 🧘‍♀️ fewer distractions, and 🎯 more intentional academic space all contribute to a better evening study experience.
  • What if I’m already inside the library before 8 p.m.?
🆗 You may remain inside after 8 p.m. — but re-entry will require card swipe access. Patrons may be asked to show their Bulldog Card by library staff if they are violating our code of conduct.
  • Will Bulldog Hours be in place every day?
📅 Bulldog Hours apply Sunday through Thursday evenings only. Weekend hours do not apply as we close at 5 p.m.
  • How long will this policy be in effect?
🗓️ Beginning August 20, 2025 and continuing indefinitely.
