A pair of ripped jeans with visible patches and seams creatively placed.

Why buy new when you can repair what you already love? The library’s Radical Mending Workshops are here to help you learn the basics of sewing, spark your DIY creativity, and build a community that believes in thrift, sustainability—and maybe even a little quiet revolution.

This five-week series of 90-minute workshops will guide you through essential mending and alteration skills. Whether you’re a beginner ready to learn how to stitch on a button, or a seasoned sewist looking for a space (and a sewing machine) to finish a project, these sessions are designed to meet you where you are.

Each workshop begins with a 30-minute group lesson on a specific skill or technique, followed by open practice time where you can work on your own projects with guidance from the instructor. Think of it as hands-on learning meets sewing circle: practical skills, confidence-building, problem-solving, and lots of creative energy.

  • Week 1: On the Mend – Sewing Basics (Sept. 24)
Get your starter sewing kit, learn essential stitches, and try out guerrilla sewing techniques. Bring an item that needs mending to prep for next time.
  • Week 2: Mending Matters (Oct. 1)
See real-world mending fixes in action, then practice on your own projects. The Mending Bar will be open!
  • Week 3: Alteration Station (Oct. 8)
Learn alteration techniques for better fits, then dive into your own larger or in-progress projects.
  • Week 4: Sew Machined! (Oct. 15)
Try your hand at sewing machines! Learn the basics and work on projects using the lab’s equipment.
  • Week 5: Oh, the Places You’ll Sew! (Oct. 22)
Wrap up with strategies for making mending part of your lifestyle (and a little protest against fast fashion). Finish your projects, share your work, and celebrate with a potluck snack party.

How It Works

  • Beginners: Space is limited, so pre-register to guarantee your spot. No experience needed—just bring curiosity (and maybe that pair of jeans you thought was unfixable). REGISTER
  • Experienced sewists: Drop in, grab a spot at the Mending Bar, and use the time to work on personal projects.

Whether you’re here to save money, learn a lifelong skill, or join a creative community of makers, the Radical Mending Workshops are your chance to pick up a needle, thread, and a DIY mindset that lasts.

REGISTER now to save your seat—or drop in if you’re already handy with a needle.
