At the top of each semester, Fresno State faculty often have questions about services in the library. This semester, those questions are even more urgent. Here is an overview of areas faculty may want to know about regarding Fall 2020 services in the library.

Many students depend upon faculty to inform them of such services, as well. Therefore faculty reviewing services is helpful to both instruction and student learning. Faculty are encouraged to send questions to Madden librarians by calling 559-278-2551 or emailing Faculty can also contact their subject librarian directly with inquiries.

The library building is open to current faculty who need to pick up and check out requested materials. Hours are Monday -Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Fresno State ID required for entry.

Building Access: A reduced area of the first floor of Henry Madden Library opened August 12th with limited in-person services for current Fresno State students, faculty and staff. The majority of the library’s services will continue to be conducted online. The number of people in the building will be limited to a safe capacity to ensure proper social distancing measures, and face masks are required to enter. A Fresno State ID Card is required for entrance using a card swipe at the main entrance.

In-building services: Faculty should reserve books via OneSearch on our website and pick them up at the library using a contact-free check-out process. Faculty can reserve Tech Lending devices via an online reservation form, then pick items up at the library.

Course Reserves: If you have placed items on Reserve for your students, we emailed faculty over the summer because reserve items now circulate for 30 days (due to the need to quarantine items between uses). We also partnered with ASI to purchase a limited number of reserve textbooks in e-book format, but we are limited by publishers’ licensing restrictions.

Faculty Appointments: Certain collections cannot be used effectively online, so we have established an appointment process for Maps/Aerials, Archives and Special Collections, Arne Nixon Center, and Music and Media (including recording in the Video Studios). Appointments are available to current Fresno State Faculty and Staff only (we are unable to accommodate students at this time).

Media Resources:  Media resources for courses can be requested via our online form below. If you would like to use a DVD from the library collection in your course, please send an email to Music & Media. Our staff will inform you of access options. If the DVD is our best option, they can check it out to you and deliver it to CFE for digitization (faculty member takes responsibility for evaluating copyright). In some cases, purchasing a DVD or streaming license may be the best option. If so, the library’s collections and acquisitions teams will evaluate requests and let you know whether we are able to provide a streaming option, and what restrictions may apply. Faculty may also contact their subject librarian for assistance with these processes. Learning Access:  Recently Technology Services announced that they were not renewing our campus contract with these services. They are, however, available through Fresno County Public Library. See this post for more information on accessing this resource.
